Our History
The Echota Baptist Church was organized on Mothers Day, May 11, 1924. Much of the records concerning the organization of the fellowship have been lost to time. However, in 1922, H.F. Jones, President of the Echota Cotton Mills, promised to match every dollar donated by employees toward the building of a church. J.D. Dorsey began the donations by pledging $10 and so, in this way, the one room church was financed, built, and dedicated in 1922.
In the spring of 1964, the Mill began to sell the houses and property it had maintained for years. With this taking place, new opportunities were presented to the church. On April 15, 1964, the church voted to incorporate. The Mill deeded the church building to Echota Baptist Church. In 1966, a new sanctuary was built and the church held its first service in the new addition in May 1967.
Whether it was during the days of the Mill or the years after, Echota Baptist Church has been known as "The Friendly Church on the Hill." Multiple generations have walked up the hill at Echota and encountered the truth of Christ in the fellowship and the study of God's Word. We pray that many more would come up the hill and join us as we encounter the Lord together. However, we look forward to being used by Christ as we come down the hill to show His love and compassion on our community. We hope you will pray about joining our fellowship on the hill as we grow together to proclaim Christ.
